Miami - Alberto Gomez, winner of the Saatchi & Saatchi, Vimeo and Moby 'Hello, Future' Music Video Challenge, has directed a spot for Conill's Miami Short Film Festival campaign.
The project is the very first TV campaign for Conill's new client, Miami Short Film Festival, which celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year, and starts on November 12th in Miami. New director Alberto Gomez's ‘Halloween' is part of a three-spot campaign (the other two are named ‘Bedside Table' and ‘Lover'), which will air on TV stations in Florida (English and Spanish) and will be projected at theatres during the festival.
Alberto Gomez won the Music Video Challenge, which was part of The Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors' Showcase at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity this summer. The brief was to interpret and bring to life one of 3 tracks from Moby's latest album 'Destroyed'. Alberto's winning film for the track 'After' is featured on the dvd 'Destroyed Deluxe', released on 31 October. The judging panel consisted of the Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide Creative Board, Moby, and competition partners BUG Music Videos and Vimeo. Alberto's prize was to work on a project for one of the key offices in the Saatchi & Saatchi Global network.
The Miami Short Film Festival campaign was shot in Mexico City on October 14th 2011, and edited at D'avant Garde Media Studio in Santa Monica, California, during the following week. It was the first time Alberto had worked with a full production and professional crew, and the resulting spot is impressive. The support from the production house, D'avant Garde Media, was pivotal in the success of the process led by Conill. Victoria Velarde, co-writer of the video which won the 'Hello, Future' competition, also acted as production designer for this campaign. The creative team in Miami, led by Creative Director Rafael Ramirez, are delighted with the outcome.
Rafael Ramirez commented: "We wanted to show the contrast between long and short things in life and get to the conclusion that shorts are great. Shorts have to be forceful, just like a good 30-second spot, and we found an idea that illustrates just that."
The campaign shows how sometimes short-term things can be better than long-term, using a metaphor comparing short films with feature-length films.
Alberto Gomez said of the experience: "I was really pleased to be given the opportunity to work with Pablo Buffagni, Chief Creative Director of Conill, and Francisco Pugliese from D'avant Garde Media, who are very experienced in the industry and have made fantastic works before. They were both extremely nice to me and Victoria, and I hope we will work together again."

Miami Short Film Festival aims to cultivate the careers of film directors, producers and screenwriters working in the short independent film sector. So this campaign was a perfect fit for young Director Alberto Gomez, who won the Saatchi & Saatchi Music Video Challenge at the tender age of 23, having only graduated from Vancouver Film School 2 years ago.
Miami Short Film Festival's (MsFF) belief is that short films, past and present, are true works of art, and deserve a venue dedicated to showcasing them. Serving as South Florida's only short film festival, MsFF was founded to showcase Miami as a leader in contemporary filmmaking, and aims to exhibit the most captivating and innovative short content. In the process, MsFF hopes to build an audience for short film as well as indulge its current dedicated followers. For two weeks every fall thousands will flock to Miami for the screening of over 80 films from around the world, that have been organized "thematically" to give each segment of shorts an identity, and each audience member a reason to return night after night.
The Miami Short Film Festival is a dedicated contributor to the cultural arts, economy, and education of Miami-Dade County. Through a highly effective strategic partnership model, MsFF has introduced its unique programs and programming year-round into theaters, classrooms, businesses, and organizations throughout Miami-Dade County.
