Theresa Byrnes Exhibition at Saatchi & Saatchi

Sydney - New York based Australian artist Theresa Byrnes has returned to her hometown for an exhibition of new ink paintings which opened on Tuesday night at Saatchi & Saatchi in Sydney.

'Changelings', her second exhibition in Australia at Saatchi & Saatchi since moving to New York in 2000, was opened by Anthony Bond, the Art Gallery of NSW's Head Curator of International Art.

Saatchi & Saatchi chief executive Simone Bartley said Ms Byrne was one of Australia's great talents, an artist whose success at home had been surpassed by her success in her new Manhattan home.

"It is a pleasure to support Australian artists such as Theresa and allow others an opportunity to share her work,'' said Ms Bartley. "The 2006 exhibition, displaying her big bold abstracts, was extremely well received and this new collection shows yet another dimension to Theresa's creativity.

"Saatchi & Saatchi is committed to supporting emerging young talent, from the New Directors' Showcase launched each year at Cannes to Trampoline which celebrates young Australian photographers.''

'Changelings' is showing at the Saatchi & Saatchi gallery space in The Rocks until May 16.

Ms Byrnes, who in 1997 was named Young Australian of the Year, began her artistic career in portraiture but shifted to abstraction in 1996. She refers to her studio as a laboratory, likening her body of work to that of a mad scientist creating creatures. Water, fabric and maternal love are the elements Byrnes uses to create these paintings, through techniques developed to realise specific effects and manipulate colour.

Some of the paintings evoke memories of kangaroos struck by a car, dead on the side of the highway, or of mining rigs, a result, perhaps, of the time she spent in Aboriginal communities in Arnhem Land.

Since 2001, Ms Byrnes has broadened her creative scope to include performance art, unhindered by the challenge of being bound to a wheelchair.
