About The Showcase
The legendary Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase has become one of the genuine highlights of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
The Showcase features the very best new directing talent from around the world and from an initial line up of several hundred directors, the Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide Creative Board make the final selection. This year, 19 directors made the cut.
Notable directors who have appeared in past Showcases include Fredrik Bond, Chris Cunningham, Nicolai Fuglsig, Jonathan Glazer, Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Danny Kleinman, David LaChapelle, Chris Palmer, The Perlorian Brothers, Jason Reitman, Mark Romanek, Tarsem, Traktor, Kinka Usher, and Ivan Zacharias.
Each year we wrap the Showcase around a theme. This year’s theme ‘Just for Hits’ is a visual and oral extravaganza featuring the world-renowned British evolutionary biologist, Professor Richard Dawkins. ‘Just for Hits' connects the world of science and academia, with the world of film and the internet. It illustrates Professor Dawkins’ theory of memes and presents the internet as an ‘incubator of creativity’, which affects the way we create and share ideas.
This year's Showcase was screened in Cannes on Thursday 20th June. Entry details for next year's Showcase will appear on this page early 2014.
Music Video Challenge
The 3rd Saatchi & Saatchi OK Go Music Video Challenge ran again this year - a competition for young directors run by Saatchi & Saatchi in partnership with OK Go, Talenthouse and BUG Music Videos. OK Go offered their new track “I’m Not Through” to directors to interpret in a music video. The winner was Nelson De Castro from Los Angeles. His prize was a trip to Cannes where his winning video was presented by Damian Kulash at the New Directors’ Showcase.
NDS Panel Discussion - Cannes
The panel was made up of Professor Richard Dawkins, Damian Kulash, award-winning director, musician and lead singer of Grammy award-winning band OK Go, Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide Digital Creative Director Tom Eslinger, and Xander Smith, Creative Director of the 2013 Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase live show ‘Just for Hits’.
On Thursday 20th June in Cannes, key people involved in the New Directors’ Showcase 2013 took part in a panel discussion, chaired by Jamie Kitman, President of The Hornblow Group USA. The 45 minute discussion aimed to provide an insight into Professor Dawkins’ theory of memes, and connect it to Internet memes and the power of the internet as an ‘incubator of creativity’.
